9 May 2025 Ballyfermot, The Blue Star Team at European Movement Ireland marked a truly memorable Europe Day at St. Michael’s Primary School, celebrating European culture and unity alongside pupils and teachers as part of the Blue Star Programme. The event, which involved every class from Junior Infants to 6th Class, showcased the dedication and creativity of both students and teachers alike, bringing the Programme to life.
The Blue Star Programme teaches primary school pupils about European cultures, diversity and the EU through creative activities and projects which complement the national curriculum. The aim of the Programme is to foster better knowledge and understanding of the EU and how it affects our lives among Irish primary pupils through fun and engaging classroom projects and activities.
Throughout the day, pupils took part in a variety of creative and engaging activities. They performed a musical arrangement of “Ode to Joy” on the tin whistle and gave an incredible rendition of the Irish song “Báidín Fheilimí”. They brought famous European artworks to life by dressing as characters from iconic paintings and recreating these masterpieces through their own paintings.
The Blue Star Crew, consisting of two pupils from each class, presented well-researched projects on the EU and warmly greeted us in every European language. A symbolic “Handshake for Europe” united the entire school community in a shared expression of friendship and solidarity. The European flag was raised to mark the occasion, and the Blue Star Programme Team were guided through the school’s “Europe Corridor,” which displayed a vibrant collection of student artwork and EU-themed projects.
It was inspiring to see how much the students have embraced learning about Europe and how they’ve made it their own in such creative ways.
