In-Person Event 

European Movement Ireland and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung were delighted to host an in-person event, ‘EU Enlargement: The New Geopolitical Background.’

On 1 May 2004, ten new countries joined the European Union in its largest-ever enlargement, with 2024 marking the 20th anniversary of this historic event. At present, the EU has entered a new geopolitical era, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine being at the centre. However, the EU remains committed to enlargement and is focused on supporting the progress and implementation of fundamental reforms for aspiring member states and pursuing internal reforms.

In this event we explored and discussed this new geopolitical reality and what it means for the accession process. By examining these issues, we can better understand the European Union’s enlargement policies and approach for the coming years.

The event was a panel discussion on EU Enlargement followed by an audience Q&A.

This was the first event in the series with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung UK & Ireland in 2024.
