European Movement Ireland is hosting a Civil Society Forum on the role of the EU and civil society in preventing and responding to violence against women and girls across the island of Ireland.

Violence against women and girls remains a significant issue in both Ireland and Northern Ireland, from domestic and sexual violence to harassment and online abuse. Civil society organisations play a vital role in supporting victims, raising awareness and informing policy.

The EU has taken a more active role in this space in recent years, most notably through the Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence and the 2026 – 2030 Gender Equality Strategy. Despite this progress, violence against women and girls, continues across the island, with over 110 femicides committed since 2020.

This forum brings together civil society organisations, policymakers, academics and elected representatives to discuss the EU’s role in tackling violence against women and girls, and to contribute recommendations for further action.
