2 October 2025 – European Movement Ireland today launched its new Blue Star Programme Media Literacy Video Series to help primary school pupils’ separate fact from fiction on European matters in a child-friendly, creative, and accessible way.
With pupils increasingly turning to online sources for information, this three-part interactive video series introduces basic research skills on EU issues and equips children to recognise misinformation and disinformation. Aimed at pupils aged 9–12, the resources are fully aligned with the National Primary School Curriculum’s focus on research in senior classes.
Noelle O Connell, CEO of European Movement Ireland said: “Given European Movement Ireland’s extensive experience working with schools nationwide, alongside our policy expertise on EU-related misinformation, we are delighted to introduce the Blue Star Programme Media Literacy Videos. This new series invites pupils to become Blue Star Detectives, learning to distinguish fact from fiction – an essential skill for navigating today’s online world. Like all elements of the Programme, these resources are flexible to complement the national curriculum, which reflects the Programme’s continued success.”
To complement the videos, European Movement Ireland has also produced Blue Star Detective activity sheets featuring word searches, role play and exercises, designed to assist in identifying mis and disinformation. These materials are available to download or print from the Blue Star Corner section of the Blue Star Programme website.
In developing these resources, European Movement Ireland drew on best practices and guidance from Media Literacy Ireland’s Stop, Think, Check, initiative, the European Commission’s Guidelines for Teachers and Educators on Tackling Disinformation, the Council of Europe’s Toolkit for History Classes: Debunking Fake News and Fostering Critical Thinking, and the MediaSmartOnline Campaign under the Better Internet for Kids Initiative.
Pupils participating in this year’s Programme will also learn about Ireland’s eighth Presidency of the Council of the European Union due to commence on 1 July 2026. Primary school teachers can register for the 2025/2026 Blue Star Programme by 10 October.
