Founding Member and Honorary President of European Movement Ireland
Dublin, 28 November: European Movement Ireland (EM Ireland) would like to extend its condolences to the family and friends of founding member and Honorary President of European Movement Ireland, Professor Louis Smith, who sadly passed away on Sunday, 25 November.
A committed European and pioneering figure in Ireland’s relationship with the EU, Prof. Smith made invaluable contributions to the work of European Movement Ireland from his initial role as one of the seven original signatories of the Articles of Association that founded the Irish Council of the European Movement, to his more recent work as an Honorary President of the organisation.
According to EM Ireland Chairperson, Maurice Pratt: “Professor Smith was a valued member of European Movement Ireland, from the organisation’s inception in 1954 right through to recent times. His determination to broaden the economic and cultural relations between Ireland and the EU resulted in tireless work and commitment to the cause. Beyond his contribution to this organisation, Louis’ work in the areas of agriculture, economics and education have ensured his legacy as a vital and authoritative voice in the fields to which he committed himself. On behalf of European Movement Ireland, I would like to express my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.”
