21 March 2017 – Blue Star Programme National Launch and Marking of the 60th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome

Twenty primary school pupils from St Vincent’s Girls National School, who are participating in the Blue Star programme, joined An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD; Minister for European Affairs, Data Protection and EU Digital Single Market, Dara Murphy TD and Ambassadors representing the original signatories of the Treaty of Rome to mark 60 years since the signing of the Treaty and the launch of the Blue Star Programme.

25 January 2017 – EM Ireland Maltese Presidency Briefing and Calendar Launch

On Wednesday, 25 January 2017, European Movement Ireland held a briefing on the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which runs from 1 January to 30 June 2017.

His Excellency Mr Norman Hamilton, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to Ireland and Minister of State for European Affairs, Data Protection and EU Digital Single Market, Dara Murphy TD spoke at our first Presidency Briefing of 2017, as we looked at the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU.

12 December 2016 – European of the Year award 2016

Óglaigh na hÉireann – the Irish Defence Forces, received the 2016 European Movement Ireland European of the Year Award 2016. The award, sponsored by Zurich, was presented by Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD.

Maurice Pratt, Chairman of European Movement Ireland gave an opening address and Vice-Admiral Mark Mellett, Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces delivered a speech of appreciation. Some 200 guests attended a celebratory lunch at the Shelbourne hotel, including former winners of the award: Catherine Day, Mary Banotti and Maurice Hayes. Other guests included Minister of State at the Department of Defence, Paul Kehoe TD.

19 July 2016 – EM Ireland Slovak Presidency Briefing and Calendar Launch

On Tuesday, 19 July 2016 European Movement Ireland held a briefing on the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which runs from 1 July to 31 December 2016. 

His Excellency Mr Dušan Matulay, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Ireland and Minister of State for European Affairs, Data Protection and EU Digital Single Market, Dara Murphy TD spoke at our second Presidency Briefing of 2016, as we looked at the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU.

9 May 2016 – Blue Star Europe Day Celebrations

As part of the Blue Star Programme, we celebrated Europe Day in City Hall, Dublin on the morning of Monday, 9 May 2016 with the pupils of Gardiner Street Primary School from Dublin and St Thomas National School from Rathmore in Westmeath. Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Janice Boylan and government TD, Deputy Dara Murphy, together with pupils from both schools formed a handshake chain to celebrate Europe and the schools’ participation in the Blue Star programme.

The Handshake also symbolises the solidarity and diversity between them as EU citizens.  The two schools have participated in the programme since its inception and Deputy Murphy made each school a special presentation to mark this achievement. RTÉ News2Day covered the event and the pupils were delighted to show off their Blue Star work on TV!

4 April 2016 – Reform and Referendum: The UK, Ireland and the Future of Europe

On Monday, 4 April 2016, European Movement Ireland in partnership with the Irish Association for Contemporary European Studies were kindly hosted by UCC for our Ireland South UK/EU event.

The Ireland South MEPs Deirdre Clune, Seán Kelly and Liadh Ni Riada addressed our Cork audience along with Dr Mary C Murphy, Jean Monnet Professor in the Department of Government, University College Cork.  We were also delighted that His Excellency the British Ambassador Dominick Chilcott joined us offer his reflections.

22 February 2016 – Reform and Referendum: The UK, Ireland and the Future of Europe

On Monday, 22 February 2016 European Movement Ireland held a lunchtime briefing for members and stakeholders with an expert panel who covered the UK’s EU agenda from a range of perspectives.

Kindly hosted by the ESB, the event was moderated by our Executive Director Noelle O Connell.   Speakers on our panel were:

On Thursday, 14 January 2016 European Movement Ireland held a briefing on the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which runs from 1 January to 30 June 2016.

His Excellency Mr Paul Schellekens, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Ireland and Minister of State for European Affairs and Data Protection, Dara Murphy TD, spoke at our first Presidency Briefing of 2016, as we looked ahead to the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU, which will run from 1 January 2016 to 30 June 2016.

7 December 2015 – EM Ireland Christmas Members Event 2015

On Monday, 7 December 2015 we held our annual Christmas Members Event in Europe House.

Moderated by EM Ireland Chairperson, Maurice Pratt, the event featured a keynote address from European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan, who also participated in a ‘Q&A’ session with our guests.  Commissioner Hogan’s speech covered issues such as climate change, the refugee crisis, Turkey, TTIP and ‘Brexit’.

23 November 2015 – Regional Launch of the Blue Star  Programme 2015-16

Minister for European Affairs and Data Protection, Dara Murphy TD visited Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil in Glanmire, Cork to kick off the school’s participation in the Blue Star Programme and to mark the school’s 10th anniversary.

16 November 2015 – European of the Year award 2015

Catherine Day, the first woman Secretary General of the European Commission (2005-2015) received the European Movement Ireland European of the Year Award 2015. The award, sponsored by Zurich, was presented by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD.  Broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan compèred the event and Maurice Pratt, Chairman of European Movement Ireland gave an address. Over 200 guests attended a celebratory lunch at the Shelbourne hotel, including former winners of the award: Mary Banotti; David Byrne; Maurice Hayes and Bertie Ahern. Other guests included former President Mary Robinson, former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave, serving and former members of the Oireachtas, as well as members of the diplomatic corps.

9 November 2015 – Reform and Referendum: The UK, Ireland and the Future of Europe

Over 130 delegates gathered in Dublin for what will be the first of a series of conversations Ireland about the UK’s EU agenda hosted by European Movement Ireland.  Tánaiste Joan Burton TD launched the series this morning at the Davenport Hotel, Dublin.

Other speakers included Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Europe and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop MSP, as well as speakers from European Movement Ireland, European Movement Northern Ireland, European Movement UK and European Movement International who addressed a diverse audience of interested members of the public, the diplomatic community, policy makers, NGOs, academics and others.  British Ambassador Dominick Chilcott offered reflections at the end of today’s event which was moderated by barrister, author & commentator Noel Whelan.

5 November 2015 – National Launch of the Blue Star Programme 2015-2016

On Thursday, 5 November 2015, the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD and the Minister of State for European Affairs and Data Protection, Dara Murphy TD launched the 2015-2016 Blue Star Programme in Government Buildings with pupils and teachers from St. Mary’s national school in Dublin.

On Thursday, 16 July 2015 European Movement Ireland held a briefing on the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which will run from 1 July 2015 to 31 December 2015.  His Excellency Mr Patrick Engelberg, Ambassador of Luxembourg to Ireland and Minister of State for European Affairs and Data Protection, Mr Dara Murphy TD spoke at the briefing and also formally launched EM Ireland’s Luxembourg Presidency Calendar.

8 May 2015 – Blue Star Europe Day Celebrations

Initiated in 2013 by Irish schools involved in the Blue Star programme, primary school children throughout Ireland once again formed a handshake across Europe chain to mark Europe Day, May 9, 2015.  Over 170 schools with more than 10,000 pupils, in communities in every county of Ireland participated in their own events; representing all of them at the Mansion House was Gardiner Street National School from Dublin.

With the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Dermot Lacey and the Minister of State for European Affairs, Dara Murphy, TD, as well as Senator Jillian van Turnhout the pupils formed a handshake chain to celebrate Europe and their own participation in the Blue Star programme. The Handshake also symbolises the solidarity and diversity between them as EU citizens, which is especially significant in 2015, marking as it does the European Year for Development.  The children and their teachers then visited Europe Union House to join in with the Europe Day festivities with the EU Ambassadors based in Ireland.

4 February 2015 – European Citizens Prize Presentation in Limerick

On Wednesday, 4 February 2015 Seán Kelly MEP visited the pupils and teachers of Askeaton Senior School, Limerick where he viewed their Blue Star work from the last three years. A presentation was also made to Askeaton Senior School, in recognition of the 2014 European Citizen’s Prize awarded to all Blue Star Teachers.

 

30 January 2015 – Reform or Referendum – The UK, Ireland and the Future of Europe

On Friday, 30 January 2015, EM Ireland and Ibec co-hosted a conference entitled Reform or Referendum – The UK, Ireland and the Future of Europe in Dublin Castle.  With fewer than 100 days to go before the UK general election on Thursday, 7 May 2015, an expert panel discussed the UK reform agenda and examined the implications for businesses on the island of Ireland should the UK leave the EU.  The event was moderated by senior RTÉ and BBC journalist, Audrey Carville.  Speaking on the morning were:

  • The Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke QC MP, Former Chancellor of the Exchequer
  • Naomi Long MP, Deputy Leader of the Alliance Party
  • Ruairí Quinn TD, Former Minister for Finance

 

24 January 2015 – Blue Star Teacher Training

On Saturday, 24 January 2015 we held a training workshop for participating Blue Star Teachers in the European Parliament Information Office, Dublin. The training allowed the teachers the opportunity to learn more about the origins and goals of the Programme, but more importantly to share ideas and best practice. Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mairead McGuinness MEP also attended the workshop to speak to the teachers and answer any questions they had.

 

14 January 2015 – EM Ireland Latvian Presidency Briefing and Calendar Launch

18 December 2014 – EM Ireland Christmas Members Event 2014

On Thursday, 18 December 2014 we held our annual Christmas Members Event in EU House.  Moderated by EM Ireland Chairperson, Maurice Pratt, the event featured a keynote address from Minister for Agriculture, Food, the Marine and Defence, Simon Coveney TD, who also launched our Just the Facts Guide to the EU, 2014-2019, a comprehensive desktop guide to the EU and its Institutions.

Hugh O’Connell, Political Editor, TheJournal.ie, and Michelle O’Donnell Keating, Co-founder, Women for Election, also shared their thoughts and reflections on the last twelve months in European and Irish politics with EM Ireland Board Member, Margaret E. Ward, and cast an eye forward to 2015.

 

11 November 2014 – Launch of the Blue Star Programme Website

On Tuesday, 11 November 2014, Minister for European Affairs and Data Protection, Dara Murphy TD, visited Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil in Glanmire, Co. Cork, to launch the brand new dedicated Blue Star website www.bluestarprogramme.ie.  The new website is a one stop shop for all things Blue Star, which participating teachers can use for access to action plans, information packs, curriculum guidelines, FAQ guides, final report templates, examples of previous work, and end of year reports.

25 September 2014 – Launch of “Irish Voices – EU Careers”

On Thursday, 25 September 2014, the Minister of State for European Affairs and Data Protection, Dara Murphy TD launched a new service for Irish students, graduates and jobseekers and career guidance professionals.  Irish Voices – EU Careers, a joint initiative of European Movement Ireland and CareersPortal.ie, seeks to inform Irish citizens about the vast opportunities and roles within the EU and connect Irish citizens to real jobs by creating dedicated area on the CareersPortal.ie site comprising information and advice on EU careers and a series of videos featuring Irish people who work in a variety of EU bodies.

29 July 2014 – Launch of Accountability Report 2013

On Tuesday, 29 July 2014, we launched our fourth annual Accountability Report.  One of our flagship advocacy campaigns, each year our Accountability Report offers insight into and analysis of Ireland’s engagement with the EU by tracking Ireland’s engagement with Europe through a series of statistical indicators.  Over the past four years, we have expanded and improved the Report, utilising our growing database of statistics to provide a comparative analysis of Ireland’s performance in Europe over four years.  In this year’s Report we have tracked 18 indicators, ranging from Irish input at the pre-legislative stage of EU policy formation to the stage of final decision-making at the Council of the European Union.

3 July 2014 – Italian Presidency Briefing

On Thursday 3 July 2014, European Movement Ireland held a briefing on the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which runs from 1 July 2014 to 31 December 2014.  His Excellency Giovanni Adorni Bracessi Chiassi, Ambassador of Italy to Ireland, and Dominic Hannigan TD, Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs spoke at the briefing and also formally launched EM Ireland’s Italian Presidency Calendar.  The event was kindly hosted by the Department of the Taoiseach in the beautiful Italian Room in Government Buildings.

19 May 2014 – This Day Next Week…  What will the European Parliament look like?

Four days before the people of Ireland went to the polls to elect their 11 MEPs, we held a lunchtime event for our members in the European Parliament Information Office in Dublin.  At the event, our panel – featuring Dr Adrian Kavanagh, NUI Maynooth; Noelle O Connell, European Movement Ireland; and Michelle O’Donnell Keating, Women for Election – looked ahead to the elections and discussed the impact on the Parliament and the EU of the potential election results.  The event was moderated by Noel Whelan SC, SC, Irish Times columnist and political commentator.

 

9 May 2014 – Blue Star Europe Day Celebrations

As part of the Blue Star Programme, we celebrated Europe Day in the Mansion House on the morning of Friday, 9 May 2014 with the pupils of St Brigid’s NS, Dublin; the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Oisín Quinn’ and Minister for European Affairs, Paschal Donohoe TD.  Before the event, Minister Donohoe paid a visit to Mary Help of Christians GNS and Gaelscoil Bharra to view their Blue Star work and to enjoy their celebrations.  Meanwhile in Wexford, two Blue Star schools were paid a visit by RTÉ News2Day, where they had a chance to show off their Blue Star work on TV!

 

29 April 2014 – My MEP – My Voice Video Screening, Dublin

As part of our new 32-county My MEP – My Voice initiative, we held the first video screening in the Screen Cinema, Dublin on 29 April 2014.  MEP candidates Lynn Boylan, Paul Murphy, Eamon Ryan and Brid Smith attended the screening which was moderated by Margaret E. Ward.  Lots of the young participants also attended the screening and used the opportunity to put their questions to the MEP candidates.

 

11 April 2014 – Trading our Way to Prosperity: The EU and Free Trade Agreements

EM Ireland, kindly supported by Irish Life, held a breakfast briefing in the Convention Centre Dublin on on the EU’s international free trade agreements.  The event was part of our programme of events to mark the organisation’s 60th anniversary.  The potential impact on Ireland of the EU’s trade agreements was discussed by a panel of speakers including Leo Varadkar, TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport; Paul Mahon, President and CEO, Great-West Lifeco; and Catherine Day, Secretary General, European Commission.  The seminar was chaired by Maurice Pratt, Chairperson, European Movement Ireland.

13-31 March 2014 – My MEP – My Voice Regional Workshops

As part of our new 32 county My MEP – My Voice initiative, we held four regional training workshops in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast during March 2014.  Participants were brought together for a day of training and filming in each of the four locations, where they met their co-stars and decided what they wanted their video to look like.  They then received training in appearing on screen before they recorded their video messages.  There was a great variety of groups and issues represented at each of the four workshops and we are looking seeing the finished product at the video screenings in late April / early May 2014.

 

26 March 2014 – Michael Sweetman Memorial Lecture

The inaugural Michael Sweetman Memorial Lecture was held in EU House to honour the legacy of former Director of the Irish Council of the European Movement Ireland, Michael Sweetman.  Minister of State for European Affairs, Paschal Donohoe TD, delivered the keynote address and paid tribute to Michael’s life and contribution of the late Michael Sweetman.  Liam Connellan, Chairman of the Michael Sweetman Educational Trust; Michael’s widow, Barbara; and Noelle O Connell, Executive Director of EM Ireland also spoke at the event.

 

10-14 March 2014 – Blue Star School Visits – March 2014

Minister of State for European Affairs, Paschal Donohoe TD, Counsellor Chargé d’Affaires at the Maltese Embassy, Ms Chantal Sciberras, and members of the European Movement Ireland team visited schools in Dublin and Limerick in March 2014.

27-31 January 2014 – Young Ideas for Europe (YIFE) Project Week

From 27-31 January 2014, Transition Year students from Wesley College, Ballinteer participated in the Young Ideas for Europe project, an initiative which aims to create enthusiasm among European youth for the European project. During the project week, participating students stepped into the role of politicians, developing their positions on the future of European energy policy, and on the last day they presented their party manifestos to MEP, Gay Mitchell.

 

27 January 2014 – EU Jobs Ireland Careers Talk, TCD

Career talk on job and internship opportunities in the EU for students of Trinity College Dublin with Minister for European Affairs, Paschal Donohoe TD, and representatives from European Movement Ireland, the European Commission Representation and European Parliament Information Office.

Training day in EU House for primary school teachers participating in the 2013/2014 Blue Star Programme with presentations from MEPs Harkin, McGuinness and Costello; EM Ireland, the European Commission and the European Parliament.

Briefing on the priorities of the current Greek Presidency of the Council of the with the Ambassador of Greece in Ireland, HE Mrs Diana Zagorianou-Prifti, and an overview of Ireland’s current relations with the EU and what we can expect in the coming year with Minister of State for European Affairs, Paschal Donohoe TD.
