Accountability Campaign
There is often a tendency to hold ‘Brussels’ responsible for everything EU related, both on the part of the general public and Irish politicians themselves. While the EU institutions obviously play a large role in what goes on at an EU level, our Irish representatives also have a big part to play in EU processes. This campaign is about creating greater transparency. While there are obviously reforms needed at an EU level, we believe that there is a lot of work that can be done to improve our own domestic processes that deal with European affairs.
The aim of the Accountability Campaign is to highlight who is exactly responsible for decision-making in the EU and to encourage greater ownership of each player’s role in EU affairs. We will do this by breaking down in simple terms where the decisions that affect Ireland are made, who they are made by, and how these people can be influenced.
Another aim of the campaign is to find solutions to increase engagement in EU affairs in the national democratic institutions within Ireland. It has become clear to us that there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to how our national institutions deal with European Affairs. This sub-standard performance only serves to allow the confusion and bewilderment surrounding European Affairs to continue.
The purpose of this campaign is to provide tangible, practical solutions to improve engagement in EU affairs in Ireland. No problem will be identified without a corresponding solution being proposed.
As part of our Accountability Campaign, we will be launching a special website. This will be taking place later on this year. Keep an eye on out Latest news for more on this.
