European Movement Ireland statement on UK proposal for temporary customs arrangements

Commenting on the UK Government’s proposals, Noelle O Connell, Executive Director of EM Ireland, said: “The UK’s reaffirmation of the ‘backstop’ option is very welcome, especially in advance of the European Council summit in June.   The ‘backstop’ agreed between the EU and UK last December safeguards not only the Good Friday Agreement, but also the integrity of the EU Single Market and Customs Union, which is vital to Ireland’s economic interests.

“Though welcome, the proposal put forward by the UK today is just one small part of the jigsaw.  The proposals are limited in scope and are intended to be temporary only. The reality is unravelling 45 years’ worth of shared rules and regulations is a mammoth and complicated task and we are still a long way from a conclusion.”
