EM Ireland statement on the passing of its Hon. President, Peter Sutherland

European Movement Ireland pays tribute to Peter Sutherland, EM Ireland Honorary President

Dublin, 08 January 2018: European Movement (EM) Ireland would like to extend its condolences to the family and friends of Peter Sutherland, who sadly passed away yesterday in Dublin after a short illness.

A former European Commissioner, Peter received widespread international recognition, not least for his dedication to the European Project.  He was honoured with the Robert Schuman Medal for his work for European Integration, as well as the Gold Medal of the European Parliament and the First European Law Prize both in 1988.  Peter was the inaugural recipient of EM Ireland’s European the Year Award and was a longstanding, highly distinguished Honorary President and Patron of the organisation.

Speaking today, Maurice Pratt, EM Ireland Chairman said: “Peter’s belief in Ireland’s place at the heart of Europe shone through in everything he did.  His considered insight into, and extensive knowledge of, Irish-European affairs will be sorely missed.  He was a leading member of our organisation and great advocate for the values which EM Ireland espouses. It is incumbent on all of us involved in European affairs to continue to champion the values of tolerance, inclusiveness, justice and peace which Peter believed in so passionately. On behalf of all of us here at EM Ireland, I would like to express our deepest sympathies to Peter’s family and his wide circle of friends and colleagues.”

Noelle O Connell, Executive Director of EM Ireland also paid her respects to Peter and offered her condolences to his family and friends.  She said that: “As an Honorary President of EM Ireland, Peter truly embodied our mission statement of ‘increasing the connection between Ireland and Europe’.  Peter’s innovations will leave a tangible and lasting legacy for generations of European citizens, not least in the form of the Erasmus Exchange Programme which he was instrumental in establishing as European Commissioner.  From his work on international trade to championing the rights of involuntary migrants, his contribution on the global stage was truly considerable.”

“Peter Sutherland was a proud Irishman, a committed European and a passionate internationalist.  Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.”

Ends.
